Mistakes to Avoid on the First Day of Preschool

Another summer has come and gone, which means school will be back in session in just a few days. Perhaps this upcoming school year will be the first for your son or daughter. Obviously, the first day of preschool can be a bit stressful for parents and students.

So what are some ways to alleviate this anxiety? The first thing is to avoid making the following mistakes. Keep reading to learn more from Tiny Turtles Preschool in Jupiter.

Lingering

We see this every year. A parent waits by the door where their child can still see them. Even though Mom or Dad might not think anything of this, lingering actually increases the sense of separation anxiety.

Most children don’t have much of an issue settling into a classroom environment if given the chance. Now, is it possible your child might cry for a minute or two after you leave? Absolutely, but don’t let that temporary anxiety throw off your morning.

At Tiny Turtles Preschool, we understand the challenges of your child’s first day. You can count on our teachers to be thoughtful, respectful, and sensitive. If your child has a more difficult time than usual adjusting to preschool, our staff will discuss ways to help their transition.

Showing your own concern

You love your child and would do anything to keep them comfortable. But is it really beneficial to show just as much anxiety as them? Probably not.

Don’t forget that children have a knack for sensing what their parents are feeling. So if you project fear or general nervousness, they’re going to pick it up. Try to keep their focus on exciting things at school such as new friends, a fun playground, and different toys and games.

The more positivity you can exude on your child’s first day, the better.

Trying to have a long conversation with the teacher before leaving

This is a pretty common mistake, too. Parents might have questions about what’s planned for the first day, how lunch is organized, etc. Please try to remember that our teachers spend hours planning and preparing for everyone to have a great start to the school year.

At Tiny Turtles Preschool, our staff gives each family a warm welcome and is more than willing to answer any questions you may have. Rest assured that once your son or daughter steps into their classroom, they will notice a creative, fun, and loving environment.

Should you have any pressing concerns, your child’s teacher will work with you in setting up an after-school meeting.
